What is Tonsillectomy?

What are the different types of Tonsillectomy procedures?

Cold scalpel surgery: In this procedure, a scalpel is used to remove the tonsils while the patient is under general anesthesia.
Ultrasonic Dissection: The scalpel used in this method vibrates at a high frequency. The vibrations cut and coagulate the tissue very precisely. In this procedure, the patient is administered general anesthesia and there might be some bleeding post the surgery.

What are complications associated with Tonsillectomy surgery?

Anesthetics given before starting the surgical procedure can sometimes cause minor issues such as headache, nausea or muscle soreness. However, these are short-term issues that get resolved soon.
Inflammation in the tongue and soft palate can lead to breathing issues, especially three to four hours after the surgery.
Some patients can also experience bleeding during the recovery process. In rare cases, patients can get an infection after the surgery and this needs to be investigated soon so that further treatment is provided at the earliest.

What precautions need to be taken after the Tonsillectomy procedure?

Take all the requisite pain medication as directed by your surgeon. Increase your fluid intake to eliminate chances of dehydration.
Immediately following the surgery, you should opt for bland foods that are easy to swallow.
Start with liquids and gradually move on to easily chewable solids. Acidic, spicy and hard foods can cause pain or bleeding and should be completely avoided.
Any strenuous activities are not recommended for at least two weeks after the surgery.
Complete bed rest is important to recover well.
Once your pain medication stops and you are able to consume a normal diet, you can resume normal work as recommended by your specialist doctor.
Blood coming out of the nose or in the saliva needs immediate attention and treatment.
