Baby’s First Winter: How to Protect Newborns in Cold Weather?

Newborns are the perfect host for viruses and bacteria as the little ones have decreased immunity and are prone to falling ill repeatedly. The first winter is tough for babies because they lose heat from their bodies faster than adults. They also cannot shiver to increase the heat in their body and don’t have the requisite body fat to warm up once they feel cold. Due to all these reasons, it is important to protect your newborns in cold weather. Read on this article by Best Private Hospital In Chandigarh to know  how you can do this.

Use layered clothing for the baby Healing Topic Image 3

Use layered clothing for the baby: Make sure to dress your baby in layers of clothes if you are stepping outside the comfort of your home. For instance, you can use a baby jacket and put a blanket on top of it. Leggings and bodysuit are in close contact with the body and provide the required warmth to the baby. You can also layer your baby with a pair of bottoms and a long sleeves t-shirt/shirt depending on the severity of cold. Ensure the fabrics are breathable and the infant does not feel uncomfortable in them.

Do not miss any vaccination: One of the best things that you can do to keep your infant’s health in check is getting him vaccinated at the right time. Do not miss any vaccination as they provide immunity to fight off flu infections that are widespread during the winter season. Also, vaccinating your baby is very important to maintain his health.

Maintain indoor temperature: Keep your home and your newborn’s room comfortable to protect him/her from the extreme winter temperatures. If the indoor temperature is too high, there is lack of moisture and humidity which results in drying out of the baby’s delicate skin. Install a humidifier in the room to maintain optimal moisture levels and keep the indoor temperature between 24 to 26 degrees Celsius.

Breastfeed your newborn Healing Topic Image 2

Breastfeed your newborn: Breastmilk comprises of antibodies and nutrients that help in increasing the baby’s immunity to fight off infections. Additionally, the warmth of the mother’s body provides comfort to the newborn.

Use a good moisturizer: The winter season can be harsh for your newborn’s skin and make it dry. Since infants have highly sensitive skin, it is essential to use a good quality moisturizer suitable for your baby’s skin.
