Why is Rhinoplasty done?
Rhinoplasty is performed if:
You want to alter the shape and size of your nose.
You want to repair a nose deformity that is present since birth.
Your nose shape has changed due to an accident.
You have breathing difficulties due to the structure of your nose.
What are the risks associated with Rhinoplasty?
Since Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure, there are certain risks associated with it. Some of these are listed below:
Breathing difficulties
Possible bleeding and infection in the nose
Allergic reaction to the anesthesia that has been administered before the surgery.
There is a probability that you end up with an uneven shaped nose. That is why it is imperative to get any surgical procedure done from experienced surgeons who have a good track record.
Numbness in and around the nose.
Inflammation or pain that does not go away.
Requirements for further surgery in case of any complications after Rhinoplasty
What is the Rhinoplasty procedure?
You can be administered general anesthesia or local anesthesia depending on the complexity of the procedure and your surgeon’s preference.
A small incision or cut is made at the lower end of the nose between the nostrils. The bone and cartilage are then adjusted depending on the requirements of the patient.
Cartilage for smaller rectifications can be taken from deep inside the nose or ear. But larger changes require cartilage from other parts of your body.
Breathing difficulties can be corrected by altering the septum (the wall between two sides of your nose
You can leave the same day after your surgery once all your health parameters are back to normal. An overnight stay is required only in cases where there are complications.
What is the recovery period for Rhinoplasty?
Complete bed rest is recommended after the surgery while keeping the head in a higher position as compared to the chest. This will decrease the possibility of bleeding and inflammation in the nose
You can feel congestion in your nose due to the swelling caused by the splints placed in your nose during the surgical procedure.
The internal dressings are generally kept intact for at least one week after the surgery.
A splint is also taped to the nose for further protection for a period of one week.
A ‘drip pad’ can be placed under your nose by the specialist surgeon to absorb drainage. The pad needs to be changed as advised by the doctor.
Avoid any rigorous activities that can put strain on the nose and increase chances of inflammation and bleeding.
Avoid blowing your nose at any cost
Instead of taking showers, take normal baths while the bandages are still intact in your nose.
Do not give extreme facial expressions and try not to move your upper lip frequently.
