In simple terms, tympanoplasty is a surgical procedure that involves repairing of the hole in the eardrum. It is a minor procedure and is performed to improve the hearing capacity of the patient. Also, some people suffer from recurrent ear infections due to the eardrum passage and tympanoplasty can provide relief from the same.
What does the tympanoplasty procedure involve?
There are different types of tympanoplasty procedures which aim to repair the tympanum or the eardrum. Your ENT specialist at Healing Hospital, Chandigarh will evaluate your ear condition based on various parameters such as age, cause and location of the hole and overall health after which it is decided which type of surgery is best suitable for you.
Different categories of tympanoplasty procedures are listed below:
Patch tympanoplasty: This procedure is conducted under anesthesia if the patient is a child but the same is not a pre-requisite for adults. During the procedure, an instrument or a mild acid is used to irritate the edges of the hole in the eardrum. A high-quality bovine pericardium patch is used to repair the hole that causes little to no pain.
Medial tympanoplasty: An endoscope or microscope is used for this surgical procedure that is performed under local or general anesthesia. The other method is to make an incision in the ear canal and lift up the eardrum to widen it. The procedure takes almost an hour to perform as a tissue graft is placed under the eardrum.
Lateral tympanoplasty: This surgical procedure is utilized if the patient has large holes in the eardrum and any previous surgeries have failed to close the opening. During the surgery, an incision is made behind the ear after administering general anesthesia to the patient. Basically, the original eardrum is removed to create a new one using a tissue graft. This procedure takes at least two to three hours to complete.
Fat tympanoplasty:This is a minor procedure in which the fat is removed from the ear lobe after freezing it. The fat is then placed in the hole to close the perforation. It is a quick procedure and takes minimal time to complete.
Why do I need to get a tympanoplasty done?
Tympanoplasty is performed by a specialist ENT surgeon under the following circumstances:
If the hole in your eardrum or tympanic membrane does not shut down on its own.
If your hearing capacity has decreased or reduced to a great extent.
To prevent the water from entering into the middle ear.
To prevent the serious occurrence of bursting of eardrum due to recurrent infections.
What to expect post-tympanoplasty?
You will be taken to the recovery room after the surgery up till the effects of anesthesia wade away.
Only a short stay is required in the hospital post-surgery so that the specialist doctor can monitor your recovery process.
Overnight stay is rarely required but is imperative in case the patient experiences severe nausea.
A bloody discharge or fluid can drain from the ear canal a few days after tympanoplasty. This is completely normal and if you have any concerns you can talk to your specialist doctor.
The symptoms of soreness and pain in the ear usually disappear after three to five days post-surgery.
Pain medication might be prescribed by your doctor to be taken for a few days after the surgery.
How much time will it take to recover completely from tympanoplasty?
You can resume normal activities within one to two days once home but always keep your ear clean and dry by keeping a cotton ball. Keep changing after a few hours for complete hygiene.
Your doctor will let you know till how many days you can’t let the water enter your ear after the surgery.
Heavy exercises should be avoided for up to three weeks after the surgery or till you see your ENT specialist for the first appointment after tympanoplasty.
