Symptoms of Appendicitis

Although appendix serves little purpose in a human body, its inflammation can cause many undesirable symptoms such as the following:

  • Intense lower-abdominal pain that starts on the right side and spreads
  • Severe pain that starts around the navel and moves to the lower right abdomen
  • Sudden pain that starts on the right side of the lower abdomen and spreads to the left
  • Unbearable pain while coughing, walking, or moving suddenly
  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhoea or constipation
  • Bloating in the abdomen
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Fever

Diagnosis of Appendicitis

Considering your medical history and symptoms, your doctor will first do a physical exam and then write you some tests in order to diagnose appendicitis. These tests include blood test, urine test and imaging tests such as X-Ray or CT scan.

Treatment of Appendicitis

In case you are diagnosed with this appendicitis, your appendix may need to be removed as soon as possible. The procedure that removes the appendix is called an appendicectomy or appendectomy.

This procedure is important since removing the appendix is regarded to be safer than the risk of it getting exploded. If the appendix gets exploded, it can release infectious contents into the abdominal cavity. This can lead to Peritonitis, which is a significant inflammation of the lining of the abdominal cavity which can prove to be lethal. Since the appendix serves no use in general, its removal does not result in any long-term complications.

Before the surgery begins, the patient is given an antibiotic so as to prevent any risk of infection. The surgery can be performed either in the form of open surgery or keyhole surgery.

In an open surgery, a long abdominal incision is made to operate the appendicitis. In case the appendix has exploded, it might lead to the formation of pus, which is drained by using a tube.

Keyhole surgery is usually the preferred type it is a less invasive surgery and it leads to quicker recovery. A keyhole surgery or laparoscopic surgery for appendicitis is performed by making three to four small incisions in the abdomen and inserting a tube, a laparoscope and the surgical equipment needed to remove the appendix.

After the appendix is removed, the incisions are closed using either dissolvable stitches or regular ones. If regular stitches are used to close the incisions, the patient has to visit the hospital to get them removed after 7 to 10 days.
