Biography

Dr. Harmandeep Singh Thabal is a dedicated and highly skilled Consultant Gastroenterologist at Healing Hospital, Chandigarh with comprehensive training in gastrointestinal, hepatic, biliary, and pancreatic diseases. He brings exceptional expertise in advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures to the Tricity healthcare landscape.

Dr. Thabal completed his MBBS from Bhatinda, and MD in Internal Medicine from Government Medical College, Amritsar, gaining comprehensive training in the diagnosis and management of diverse medical conditions and developing strong clinical acumen in managing complex cases. His quest for specialization in digestive diseases led him to complete his DM in Gastroenterology from Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla (April 2022 – April 2025)—one of North India’s premier gastroenterology training centers—where he received extensive hands-on training in advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures. His DM residency provided integrated exposure to the complete spectrum of gastroenterological interventions, making him proficient in managing both routine and highly complex GI cases.

Dr. Thabal is highly skilled in performing advanced endoscopic procedures including diagnostic and therapeutic Upper GI Endoscopy (evaluation and treatment of esophageal, gastric, and duodenal disorders), comprehensive Colonoscopy (screening, polyp detection and removal, inflammatory bowel disease assessment), ERCP – Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (bile duct stone removal, biliary stricture management, pancreatic duct interventions), EVL banding – Endoscopic Variceal Ligation (emergency and prophylactic treatment of esophageal varices), Endocryl glue injection (gastric variceal obliteration), esophageal stricture dilatation (benign and malignant strictures), endoscopic-guided NG/NJ tube placement (nutritional support in complex cases), foreign body removal (emergency endoscopic extraction), cold snare polypectomy (safe removal of colorectal polyps), side-viewing endoscopy for ampullary lesions, balloon sweep for bile duct clearance, CBD stent placement (biliary drainage procedures), and Fibroscan evaluation (non-invasive liver fibrosis assessment).

Dr. Thabal specializes in the complete spectrum of gastroenterological conditions including gastrointestinal diseases (GERD, peptic ulcer disease, gastritis, upper and lower GI bleeding, swallowing disorders, diarrhea, constipation), hepatic disorders (chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, hepatitis B and C, fatty liver disease, portal hypertension, ascites management), biliary diseases (gallstones, bile duct stones, cholangitis, biliary strictures, pancreato-biliary malignancies), pancreatic disorders (acute and chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic pseudocyst, pancreatic cancer), inflammatory bowel disease – IBD (Ulcerative Colitis management, Crohn’s disease treatment, disease activity monitoring, biologic therapy), gastrointestinal emergencies (acute GI bleeding, acute liver failure, acute pancreatitis, biliary sepsis), colorectal diseases (polyps, colorectal cancer screening, diverticular disease), and functional gastrointestinal disorders (irritable bowel syndrome, functional dyspepsia).

Dr. Thabal has made significant academic contributions with a strong research inclination in inflammatory bowel disease. His DM thesis focused on “A Study on Application of Neutrophil/Lymphocyte Ratio & Lymphocyte/Monocyte Ratio as Non-Invasive Biomarkers in Assessing the Disease Activity and Severity of Ulcerative Colitis,” contributing valuable insights into non-invasive disease monitoring in IBD patients. He has published research papers in peer-reviewed journals including “Prevalence and Characteristics of Venous Thromboembolism in Outpatients of Ulcerative Colitis: A Single-Center Experience,” “Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte and Lymphocyte-to-Monocyte Ratios as Non-Invasive Biomarkers for Assessment of Activity in Ulcerative Colitis – A Cross-Sectional Study,” and “An Uncommon Presentation of Gastric Carcinoma: A Case Report,” demonstrating his commitment to advancing gastroenterological knowledge.

He has actively participated in major national-level academic conferences including INASL (Indian National Association for Study of the Liver), ENDOCON (National Endoscopy Conference), ISGCON (Indian Society of Gastroenterology Conference), and EBG (Evidence-Based Gastroenterology), staying updated with the latest advances in gastroenterology and hepatology. He is a Lifetime Member of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology (ISG)—the premier organization for gastroenterologists in India.

Dr. Thabal is registered with the Punjab Medical Council (Registration No. 45362), ensuring adherence to the highest standards of medical ethics and professional conduct.

According to Dr. Thabal, “Modern gastroenterology combines precise diagnostic techniques with minimally invasive therapeutic interventions to restore digestive health and improve quality of life.” He is medically and technically very sound and believes in ethical practice with evidence-based treatment for his patients. He makes sure that his patients and families are fully aware of their gastrointestinal conditions, procedural details, and treatment options, and goes the extra mile in educating them about disease management, lifestyle modifications, and long-term digestive health maintenance from conservative management to advanced endoscopic interventions, ensuring informed decision-making at every step.
