Hip Replacement Treatment In Chandigarh

Best Hospital for Hip Replacement in Chandigarh, Mohali

A hip joint is made up of two parts namely the hip socket and the femoral head. Hip replacement, also called hip arthroplasty, is a surgery that replaces both or a part of the hip joint with an artificial joint. This artificial joint is called prosthesis.

People might need a hip replacement surgery due to an injury, tumour, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or osteonecrosis. Hip replacement surgery is particularly needed when the hip joint wears out or becomes injured, limiting one’s motion and causing continuous pain.

Procedure of Hip Replacement

The purpose of hip replacement surgery is to let the patient resume normal activities with lesser or no pain.

There are two types of hip replacement surgery namely total hip replacement and partial hip replacement. In total hip replacement surgery, both the ball and the socket are changed, whereas in a partial hip replacement, only the ball of the hip is replaced.

A hip replacement surgery can be performed in two ways namely traditional hip replacement and minimally invasive hip replacement. In a traditional hip replacement surgery, the surgeon makes a 10 to 12 inch incision on the hip’s side, and then splits the muscles, allowing the hip to be dislocated and fully examined. Then the worn out femoral head is removed, and a metal stem is inserted into the hollow middle of the femur.

In a minimally invasive hip replacement surgery, the surgeon enters the hip joint by pulling the muscles aside through one or two small incisions. This method is beneficial for a number of reasons like lesser pain, quicker recovery, less damage to healthy tissues and muscles, shorter hospital stay and lower chances of hip dislocation.

The health and age of the patient determines the kind of surgery that is best suited for them. It is advisable to consult an orthopaedic doctor before making up your mind regarding hip replacement surgery.

Before and After Hip Replacement

When you visit your doctor to consult about your hip replacement, you will be physically examined and asked to run through some tests like blood test, X-Ray, etc. You will be asked about your medical history, current medications and tobacco consumption. If you consume tobacco, you will be asked to quit as it interferes with the hip replacement surgery.

When you reach the hospital for your surgery, you will be given a spinal block to numb the bottom half of your body. You may also be given a general anaesthetic, which will put you in an unconscious state. To assist block pain after your surgery, your surgeon may also inject a numbing drug around the nerves or the joint.

After a successful surgery, you’ll be relocated to a recovery area for a few hours till your anaesthetic wears off. Your blood pressure, pulse and other vitals will be monitored by medical personnel. You may be urged to take deep breaths, cough, or blow into a device. Depending on your health, you may be discharged the same day.
